Cow Pong! From the glory days of co-directing with Michael Gurevich: “Music in the last century abounds in origin myths: Messaien composed his Quatour Pour la Fin du Temps in a concentration camp. Robert Johnson sold his soul to the devil at the crossroads. Sonny Rollins discovered his new sound practicing on the Williamsburg Bridge. Dissatisfaction with equal temperament led Harry Partch to invent new tuning system. To these we can now confidently add: The day that QUBe devised Cow Pong. With musical nods to Steve Reich, György Ligeti and Gene Frenkle, this piece is a beautiful marriage of process, competition, polyrhythm and suspense. Performed by QUBe in the Sonic Lab of SARC, at Queen’s University Belfast on May 6, 2009.” For further fine examples from this era of QUBe, visit here.
